Windows Cannot Be Installed to MBR Disk

Windows Cannot Be Installed to MBR Disk

While trying to install Windows 8 or Windows 10 to a disk, you may receive the following error message:
“Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only installed on GPT disks”.
Why Windows cannot be installed to MBR disk?
This is caused by the FFI system of your mother board. I will explain. Under EFI systems, theoretically both MBR disk and GPT disk can be used to boot operating systems, but Microsoft defines that Windows can only be installed on GPT disk to boot. This, you will need to convert the MBR disk to GPT to fix this error.
I will show you how you can do this.

Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk to Fix the Error

When Windows cannot be installed to MBR disk happens, you can use MiniTool Partition Wizard to help to convert non-system disk from MBR to GPT.
Note: you should consider whether you have another OS available (dual-boot) to use on the same computer. If there is, steps are:

Step 1: Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard Free to get the main interface. Then click on the disk to be converted and select “Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk“. In my case, I choose Disk 3.
Step 2: You can see that Disk 3 will be turned into GPT disk. Then click “Apply” to make this operation effective.
Tip: Even if there are some data on the target disk, the target disk will be converted to GPT disk without data loss.
However, if this is a bare computer without any Windows OS to use, you should consider using MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD to help you. The operations are the same with using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition, but before that you should burn the ISO file to a bootable media first.

That’s not all…here is another solution if Windows cannot be installed to this disk.
As most UEFI motherboards support both Legacy boot and UEFI boot, but users can change the boot mode manually. If Windows cannot be installed to a disk error is caused by setting boot mode to be UEFI only, you can change it to Both or CSM boot.
