Q: “Non system disk or disk error hp laptop”
My mom has an HP Compaq nc8430 computer. She recently encountered this problem this morning. Does this mean that the hard drive’s dead? Any help is appreciated greatly!
Sometimes when starting up computer, you see the following error message and Windows fails to load:
“Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready.”
What does this mean? According to Microsoft, this error message can happen if the boot device does not contain boot files. In this post, we tell you the possible solutions in Windows 10.
No matter what error message you encounter, we would recommend you try the easiest way first. For example, you can remove all hard drive, leaving the boot device there only. Or you can enter BIOS and confirm whether the boot device is set to the first place. What’s more, you can remove the boot device first and then reconnect it to computer to check whether it is the bad connection bringing this error message.
But if all of these simple solutions are useless, you may head on to try the following ways:
Generally speaking, virus attack and hard drive failure are easy to cause MBR damage, further leading to this booting error. Luckily, we have an easy way to repair damaged MBR. On a normally running computer, install MiniTool Partition Wizard Pro and launch it. Then click Bootable Media Builder on the top right corner to create a bootable media and use it to boot your computer.
It is also possible that the system partition is set as inactive due to virus invasion. In this case, Widows cannot find the booting files and shows you non system disk or disk error. For more information, view our previous post System Partition Should Be Active Partition for Normal Boot?
You can also use MiniTool Partition Wizard bootable media to help. At the disk map area, view the state of the system partition. If it shows “None”, it is not an active partition. In this situation, you can select the system partition and choose “Set Active” from the action panel. Don’t forget to click Apply finally.
If the system partition is already an active partition, you can return to Windows 10 installation media and try Start-up Repair tool. Read How to Perform Startup Repair to get the details.
