MBR disk is widely-used today for hard drives that is no larger than 2TB. Also, the default type of newly-added disk under Windows OS is MBR. When a new drive is mounted in Windows OS, Windows will ask you whether you would like to initialize it to MBR or GPT. You can also choose to ignore this selection if this drive is not urgently needed. Then each time you open Disk Management, you will be asked to make a choice.
However, what if you mistakenly initialized it to GPT disk and want to initialize it to MBR? How can you find the option in Disk Management? Normally, there are two ways to initialize GPT disk to MBR disk. That is to use Disk Management and the third-party partition magic like MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Use MiniTool Partition Wizard
MiniTool Partition Wizard is a piece of professional partition magic. It has five editions, each has its own features and can be applied to different platforms. If you are a home user, then the Free Edition and Professional Edition can meet your needs; if you are a server user or technician, then you need the help of more advanced versions.
In order to initialize GPT disk to MBR disk, first of all download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard to your computer, and then run it to get the main interface. Here take the Professional Edition for example.
Step 1: select the desired GPT disk on the disk partition list, and then choose “Delete All Partitions” on action panel. Then the hard drive will be shown as unallocated disk space.
Step 2: again right-click the GPT disk and select “Initialize to MBR Disk” from the context menu,
Step 3: you can check the pending operations to see what will be done. Besides, you can see from the disk layout that the GPT disk will be turned to MBR disk. If you confirm to do so, click “Apply” to perform all previous operations. After that, you will initialize GPT disk to MBR disk.
because initialize GPT disk to MBR disk requires deleting all partitions, you had better perform data backup in advance. You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard to help copy disk.
Use Windows Disk Management
In fact, Disk Management will ask you to initialize new disk when it is added to computer. When the drive is already initialized, that prompt is gone. However, you can also do these:
Step 1: run “diskmgmt.msc” to call out Disk Management.
Step 2: on Disk Management interface, click on each partition of the GPT drive and delete volume one by one.
Step 3: click on the GPT disk and choose “Convert to MBR Disk“.
After performing the above step, you have initialized GPT disk to MBR disk on Windows OS. To make a conclusion, both ways are easy to carryout, just choose the one you prefer.
