For a long time, MBR disk has been the leading disk style. Now, as more and more huge disks are sharing the market, GPT disk is gaining its popularity.
MBR disk supports at most 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions plus 1 extended partition, and the maximum disk size can reach to 2TB. Different from MBR disk, GPT disk can recognize at most 128 partitions and the maximum disk size reaches up to 18EB. Besides, the partition table of GPT disk will be automatically backed up, thus, GPT disk owns higher security performance.
When mounting a new drive to Windows operating system, you will be guided to initialize the new drive to MBR disk by default. If you didn’t pay attention to this, and you have already put that drive into use, someday you realize that only 2 TB disk space is used, how can you initialize MBR to GPT?
Generally speaking, there are two common ways to initialize GPT disk to MBR disk – use Disk Management and the Partition Wizard. The former one should be carried out when you connect the hard drive to PC and then open Disk Management to load it. While the second one can be done whenever you want to do it.
Way 1: Initialize to GPT disk with Disk Management
1. Connect the new drive to PC.
2. Run “diskmgmt.msc”, click “Disk Management” on the left storage unit to see the main interface.
3. Disk Management will ask you to initialize the hard d rive before you can use it. Choose to initialize to GPT. Then your drive is formatted to GPT.
Way 2: Use MiniTool Partition Wizard to Initialize a Disk to GPT
Once you have put the new drive into use, you are unable to initialize that disk to GPT in Disk Management. However, you can use MiniTool Partition Wizard to do this. First of all, please download and install it to PC, and then run MiniTool Partition Wizard to see its main interface:
Note: This feature can process disk without any partitions only. So data backup is rather necessary. Please use the “Copy” feature to make backup. However, if you want to keep data in sound condition in that drive, you can use “Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk” to avoid data backup.
Step 1: Right click on the hard drive to select “Delete All Partitions” and click “Apply“.
Step 2: Right click on the desired disk again and select “Initialize to GPT Disk“, and then click “Apply“.
When users use MiniTool Partition Wizard to initialize MBR disk to GPT disk, they can make full use of the hard drive capacity and enjoy higher security performance. Try this freeware by yourself.
