Extend RAID-5 Volume

What Is RAID 5 Volume

Since Windows 2000, dynamic volumes can be created on dynamic disks. With dynamic disks, you can get rid of the limitations in basic disks when carrying out extending volume. There are five types of dynamic volumes: simple volume, spanned volume, mirrored volume, striped volume, and RAID-5 volume.
RAID-5 volume requires three to thirty-two dynamic disks, for each RAID-5 volume, the capacities are the same. RAID-5 is a fault-tolerant volume. That is to say, when a portion of RAID 5 volumes fails, data on the rest disks will be keep safe.. RAID-5 optimizes disk I/O performance and offers great flexibility for Windows Server at the same time.
While dynamic disks hold so many advantages, we have to notice that dynamic volume still has the opportunity to run out of space. Then how can we fix the low disk space problem on RAID-5 volume?
You may wonder can you extend RAID-5 volume with Windows built-in Disk Management utility, the answer is No. Disk Management only works on simple volumes and spanned volumes, not including striped/mirrored/RAID 5 volumes. But you don’t need to worry too much, because we will introduce a useful way to expand RAID 5 volumes.

How to Extend RAID-5 Volume on Dynamic Disk

MiniTool Partition Wizard Server is a disk management tool applies on both Windows PC and Windows Server to manage both basic and dynamic disks. It is powerful to expand simple/spanned/striped/mirrored/RAID 5 volumes. To extend dynamic volume, only three steps are needed.
Extend RAID-5 volume with Partition Wizard Server:
Before you do: please make sure there are unallocated space on each dynamic volume RAID-5 locates on. If Not, try free out some free space from other dynamic volumes.
Step1: Open Partition Wizard Server Edition. Right click on one the RAID-5 volume and select “Move/Resize Volume“.
Step2: In the pop-up window, drag the slider bar to occupy some unallocated space. Then click “OK” to go back to the mian interface.
Step3: To save the changes, you need to click “Apply” on the toolbar. Note operations on dynamic disks require a reboot.
Now you can free download the demo edition of this dynamic volume resizer to experience RAID-5 volumes expansion. However, to apply all changes, you still need to purchase a Server license.
