There are times we need to reinstall Windows 7, due to virus attack or human errors. In this case, if we can successfully finish the reinstallation, this is even better. However, in many cases Windows was unable to complete the format. Usually we will see error code 0x80070057:
“Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80070057.”
What caused this error? And how can we solve it? Next, we will going through this issue.
Generally speaking, this error code appears when the system reserved partition is damaged. Microsoft suggests users to delete the system reserved partition and the system partition, then create a new partition, and format it during the installation process. To do this, follow the steps in this post.
If you are lucky enough, you have solved this issue by carrying out the method mentioned in the linked post, but some users keep receiving the 0x80070057 error. This time we can trying formatting the hard drive in command prompt or in Partition Wizard boot mode.
Format hard drive in Command Prompt
1. Boot computer with windows 7 installation DVD, then select “Repair Your Computer” – “Use Recovery Tools” – “Command Prompt”;
2. Type “diskpart”, and enable Administrative privileges;
3. Type “list disk” – “select disk n” – “clean”; (n means the specific disk number)
4. Type “create partition primary” ;
5. Type “select partition 1” – “active”;
6. Type “format fs=ntfs” to do a full format into NTFS.
7. Type “exit” when the format is finished.
Note: all the command should be edited without quote.
Format hard drive in Startup Mode
A more effective way is to use MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD to format the hard drive. What you should do is to download the iso image and then burn it to a bootable media. How to carry out the format?
Step1: Set computer to boot from the bootable media in BIOS, then you can the main interface of Partition Wizard.
Step 2: Right click on the system partition and choose “Format“.
Step 3: MiniTool Partition Wizard will warn you this is the system partition, would you like to continue? Click “Yes” and apply the changes.
The formatting progress will be finished soon. Then you can carry out the reinstallation of Windows 7.
Note: If you have important data in system partition, you had better make a backup in advance. Thus, format won’t lead to data loss.
