The conception of dynamic disk were first emerged in Windows 2000. From then on, it is permanently added into the Windows administrator tools. Basic disks and dynamic disks are two types of hard disk configurations in Windows, and the former one is more commonly used by most Windows average users. The biggest advantage of dynamic disk is that it allows you to make use of free space on different disks to create partitions. These partitions can be classified as simple volume, spanned volume, striped volume, mirrored volume, and RAID-5 volume. No matter you are using basic disks or dynamic disks, you can adopt any file system, FAT and NTFS. In Windows Disk Management utility, you can easily change a basic disk to a dynamic disk. However, once it is converted, you can’t change it back, unless you delete all volumes on the drive, or use some tools such as MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Why you need to change dynamic disk to basic disk? Firstly, dynamic disk supports less OS. Only the latter version of Windows 2000 supports dynamic disk. Secondly, a lot of software fails to work on dynamic disks, such as like ghost and VMware. Thirdly, dynamic disks are not as stable as basic disk, and is easy to become invalid and unreadable. Fourthly, when running dual boot operating systems on dynamic disk, one may work normally, while the other one will encounter blue screen, which may lead to system crash. So, it is of great importance to change dynamic disk to basic disk.
As what we have mentioned above, you can use third-party software like MiniTool Partition Wizard to do the conversion between dynamic disk and basic disk. Then how to carry out the operations?
Step 1: Download and run MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional (For server users, please download the server edition). Right click the dynamic disk you want to convert and then choose Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk.
Then you are likely to see some prompts. Do as the solution tells you. You may asked to restart the computer, so please save all the important data.
1. “Sorry, there are too much dynamic volumes on this disk, or some newly created dynamic volumes exist on this disk. It cannot be converted directly! You could read FAQ or contact us to seek help.”
Solution: This means your hard disk was initialized to MBR prior to converting to dynamic disk, which can hold 4 primary partitions at most. Please copy small dynamic volumes to unallocated space on basic disk via Copy Volume function, and then delete these volumes until there are 4 volumes only on the dynamic disk.
2. “MiniTool Partition Wizard cannot convert the specific dynamic disk to basic disk. Because MiniTool Partition Wizard can only convert mirrored volume or simple volume that has only one partition.”
Solution: This is because a partition occupies several volume segments on different disk, and this volume configuration is not supported in basic disk. Therefore, it could not be converted to basic disk. You can use “copy volume” first to copy the target volume to another basic disk directly.
Step 2. Click Apply to save all changes.
Quite easy, right? Just by two steps you can complete the dynamic disk to basic disk conversion. Download MiniTool Partition wizard Professional to get you out.
