Change Drive Letter Windows 10

Sometimes we need to change drive letter Windows 10. For example, if your disk layout is “partition C + partition D + unallocated space + partition E”, and then you create a new partition on the unallocated space, then the new added drive letter is F by default. However, normally we like the drive letters to be arranged in alphabetical order. Thus, how to exchange drive letters to make them “C + D + E + F” instead of “C + D + F + E”? OK next, I am going to tells you how to change drive letter Windows 10.

Two Ways to Change Drive Letter in Windows 10 Effectively

Here are two ways to change drive Windows 10. Detailed image-text tutorial for Windows change drive letter are shown below.
Way 1. Use MiniTool Partition Wizard Free
Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition (works for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10), then install it and launch it to get the main interface.
Step 1. First of all, we need to release drive letter E. So click on partition E and choose “Change Letter” Feature.
Step 2: in the pop-up window, remember to choose None which means to remove. Then click “Apply” to save change.
Step 3. Now click partition F and choose “Change Letter“, in the pop-up window, drop down the letter box and choose E as the wanted drive letter. Finally hit “Apply” to save changes.
Step 4. Use the same way to add drive letter F to the partition that we just remove drive letter.
Way 2. Use Windows Disk Management
Similar with using MiniTool Partition Wizard, we need to remove drive letter E, turn partition F to partition E, and then turn the original partition E to partition F.
Step 1. Right click partition E to choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths…
Step 2. In the pop-up window, choose “Remove“.
Step 3. Now right click on partition F and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths…” In the pop-up window, choose E as the new drive letter.
Step 4. Finally, choose partition F as the drive letter of the last partition.
By removing drive letter of Windows 10 partition in Disk Management, you may think you have hide that partition at the same time. In fact, this is different from hide partition in the real sense, for anyone who can access you computer can use the same feature to allocated drive letter to them to make them appear. But is you use “Hide Partition” of MiniTool Partition Wizard, you will find that Disk Management is unable to add new letter for the hidden partition. That’s really helpful.



In the end of this article, we would like to mention that it is not recommended to change the drive letter of Windows system partition as well as the system reserved partition, for any changes related to system partition may lead to some program invalid, leading to the OS fails to boot.
